Before you can learn the basics of Foosball, you will need a table to play on, so the first few paragraphs will teach you about the basics of how to choose the correct table design.
Then we go into details of what you need to learn as a player. Who knows, one day you may become a Pro Foosball Player.
A full-size one is about four foot long and two foot wide. A standard table has eight rows of playing figures fixed to horizontal metal poles.
Each player controls four rows of these figures. The poles are pushed and twisted, and in this way the players can move the foosball-players around, pass the ball between the players and shoot at the goal.
A large number of unique designs exist. Some are very simple and budget priced. Some are very elaborate and sleek. Some companies have manufactured very luxurious tables available for players to buy for their homes. You will often find a pay foosball table in a club or bar.
These are solid tables and designed to be extremely robust. Foosball is played at a professional level with national and international competitions taking place.
For this reason, you will sometimes see a foosball table being described as professional or competition standard. The rules of tournaments include specifications about the tables that are used in the competitions and, of course, these standards are high.
Professional level foosball is a legitimate sport by most of its players and fans. It is undoubtedly an extremely skillful game and, like in any other sport, the players will perform better with the best quality equipment available to them. With foosball, this is around the quality and mechanics of the table being used.
A good quality foosball table is solidly constructed with have brackets holding the sides of the table and the playing surface in place. The playing surface will be supported by a framework and will be made of a thick and hard wearing material to reduce the possibility of it warping over time.
The side walls and surface will be slotted together for strength and additional support. On cheaper models where this is not the case, tables can become damaged quickly as they see a lot of vigorous action!
Differences in the design of a table have a significant effect on how the game will play. Some tables, for example, have sloped corners to help keep the ball in play and within reach of the playing figures. Other tables do away with the need for sloping corners by having an extra playing figure in each corner to reach the ball.
The surface material will also change the flow and speed of play. The ball also changes the way the game plays out. Foosball table balls can be made of wood, cork, plastic and sometimes metal. The material of the playing surface and the ball changes the friction and the grip. This significantly improves the feel of the game and the control that the player can have over the foosball match.
Spinning is the worst thing you can do if you want to become a dominant player. It is really only done by beginners, and it is an illegal move. While to the beginner it seems like a powerful move, as you improve you will aim and shoot far better when you do not spin the rods!
You can look at it like in other sports, just like pool or golf. It’s so important to have the correct technique, and your stance makes sure to that.
The right posture and grip will help you become a better foosball player. The primary focus is to position your body, so you feel free and have the proper movement for passing and shooting. It makes it so much easier when you feel free, and your game up’s a level.
When playing a lot of pros suggest angling your feet and body more at a diagonal position. Make sure your left side is close to the foosball table, and your right side is away from the table. This will help give you space to swing your right arm when you are moving the rods up and down.
Think about always having your left foot forward and right one back. To illustrate how this will make a dramatic effect, stick your right arm directly out in front of your body and pull it right back in. See how there’s a few resistance once your elbow hits your side.
This is again something that is not thought about too much by the beginner, but is an essential part of improving your play.
The most common mistake is to grip the handles too tight which can reduce your mobility, which reduces the power that you can put into each shot. There are two main types of grip in Foosball which are used when making specific shots (see later)
Grip the handle with a small gap in the skin between the index finger and the thumb.
If the skin is completely touching the handle, you are most likely gripping the handle too hard. But it will depend on how big your hands are.
The wrist flick is one of the more natural parts of the game for most people, a lightning fast flick of the wrist to set the ball rocketing down the table
As you become more adept at the game, you realise that with a flick of the wrist, you can send the ball moving as fast as you did when spinning the player.
But now with a lot more control. Control of where the ball goes and what angle your players are standing.
This skill is one where you can practice alone, as you might try it repeatedly. Use the middleman on the central bar and put him parallel with the goal. Forget about everything else and concentrate only on the wrist.
Rotate your hand as quick as you can to hit the ball, trying to “snap” the player to get the most potent flick that you can
Each rod in the game is meant for different purposes, knowing and using each rod for its best purpose will help you achieve your goal of becoming a skilled player.
These rods are to block your opponent’s shots and capture the ball. Once you have possession of the ball, you need to pass it up to the forward rods.
The midfield rod is usually used to pass to the attacking rod or to shoot at the goal. This rod is not as good at shooting from, there are still a lot of men in front of you, and so try to learn to pass to the attacking front row.
This rod is only used to shoot at our opponent’s goal. There are not a lot of men in front of you now, and this is the best place to score from.
This means basically getting the ball and keeping the ball by passing it to your other players. This is not so easy on damaged tables where the ball can change direction off any dents or obstacles. If you have a table like this, it may be worth considering getting the playing surface changed.
However, you will not always have a perfect table, so if you can learn to play on an older type table with dings and dents in, it will be a skill that comes in useful.
Gently taps the ball with the front of the player’s toe to trap the ball
Similar to intercepting the ball, bring the player down by snapping the wrist to trap the ball with the player. This is more difficult than intercepting, especially when the ball is moving quickly.
This is the art of being able to move the ball from player to player on the same rod. As you get better at this, you will be able to do it quickly and pass the ball to mem who have a better shot at the goal.
The simplest way to foosball serve the ball to yourself would be to put the foosball inside the hole while pinning it between your index finger and thumb with your left hand. Your index finger should be on the interior of the table, and your thumb should be on the outside of the table to hold the ball in position. It’s not prohibited to roll your index finger on the table so that you can keep the ball in place before you serve the ball.
Next, take your right index finger and apply pressure on the top right-hand side of the foosball to keep it pinned against the hole of the table. After that, you can release your left hand in the ball and put it on your 5 bar pole handle to prepare to take the server to yourself. Next, roll your right index finger to the left over the top of the ball and allow it to drop through the hole. See the foosball function diagram below to see the appropriate means to spin the ball for a function.
This will put some spin on the ball so that you can permit it to drop immediately towards the 2nd guy on your own 5 bars. This may take some practice, but you should can get the foosball and keep possession directly as server.
There are a lot of shots that you can learn to improve your game of Foosball. Some people think you should try to learn them all, so you can try to keep your opponent guessing what you are going to do next.
We have found however that learning to do one of these shots really well, will mean that you win games more often. Your opponent may have a good idea of what you are going to do, but unless he is equally good in defence as you are at your “Specialty” shot, then he is going to be at a distinct disadvantage!
You win foosball games by scoring more goals than your opponent, and your score goals by shooting. This means that shooting is one of the most critical things in Foosball. There are a lot of shot types, some have over one name Below are most of them, with details on how to perform these shots.
Pin the ball on the table with your offensive middle man upon the 3 bar. The set up usually takes a lot of practice, and you will have to lose many balls before you can perfect the setup.
Snake shot is probably the hardest to set up after the aerial shot. After setting up, pass the ball from the outside offensive man to your middle man. As the ball is moving, tilt your middle man back at an angle to let the foosball strike your man’s toe at the corner. This would make the ball to go straight forward, and you can come around the top of it to pin it down against the table.
The roll overshot is an open-handed wrist shot that gives the shot its fast speed. After pinning the ball, you need to learn to pull or push the ball laterally while rolling your wrist up simultaneously so that your man spins in a counterclockwise direction and comes to strike the foosball into the goal.
Shoot the sides accurately so that your opponent would not notice a tendency to proceed towards one side or other. The shot is usually less effective on most of the non-tornado tables. Thus, if you are playing on one, ensure that the 3-rod is well lubricated, or the shot may be almost impossible to execute.
Pros: One of the most significant advantages of snake shot lies in the opportunities of placement for the shot. Majority of other shots like push and pull shot go typically in a single direction. But with snake shot, you can hit straight in, push or pull towards either end of the goal.
Many defenders would try to guard the middle hole all times as it is the quickest and easiest shot to hit. They would try to force you to head all the way to wither hole 1 or hole 5. Some defenders would move their men in back-and-forth direction to time your shots.
And this is when your mental game and timing needs to overcome their defensive strategies and timing. Keep in mind that knowing your opponent’s timing and reading their moves is as important as shooting your shot with precise accuracy. Try to develop analytic skills and play with a variety of people to learn many ways of dealing with snake defenses.
Start with the ball towards the centre of the 3 bar player.
Push the ball then quickly hit it at your opponents goal. This is a beginner shot that is not used by a lot of professionals
Begin this shot near the far player on the 3rd bar.
Pull the ball toward the middle player then fire at the goal. A hard to master shot that can be very powerful
Similar to the Pull Kick Shot, shoot near the closest player on the 3rd bar.
Push it to the middle player and then kick it into the goal. A tough shot!
Another shot for expert level players. Dribble back and forth between the players before shooting!
Named after the noise the ball makes while performing this move
Another expert level shot that can be very difficult to perform.
Fake out your opponent by switching directions by keeping one toe of the player on the ball.
After the fake, look to see if any opens have occurred and take your shot. Again a move for the experts
This is similar to how you may take a shot on a pool table, shooting the ball so that it goes into the goal via one of the table sides.
Harder to do because of the angles involved but generally unexpected, so the opponent’s men are not in your way
Same as a bank shot but from the goalie.
Much harder as there are a lot of men in the way.
Pin the ball under a player's foot with the contact being at the top of the ball.
Push or pull the bar to give the ball allow the ball to start moving. Once it is in the required position, hit it into the goal
A trick shot usually done with the defenders. The ball is lifted between 2 players and caught on the back of one of them.
The man is then flipped over firing the ball through the air towards the opponent’s goal
This should be one of the most basic and first things you learn when playing Foosball. Just doing this can save goals you a lot of times.
To follow the ball, you need to watch where the ball is at all times and move your rods so that the player is always following and blocking the ball. Then if a shot is taken your men are preventing it, and you do not have to quickly try to position your men, which is almost impossible once the shot has been made.
You need to be watching and your men and always moving them to follow that foosball
As a beginner, you will not be doing your play any good if you are trying to do fancy things like trying to score from the goalie. It is possible, but it is challenging, and there are much better moves you can do with the goalie.
The goalie is there to stop the ball then pass the ball back out to your other men
We all like to win, playing players we know we can beat will make us feel better about ourselves. However, to improve your game, quickly, it's helpful to play players that are better than us.
It is better to improve your defense by losing to a superior opponent than it is to enhance your attack by playing a worse player. You will make more significant gains.
Also, as your defense gets better, you will get more opportunities to attack this better player, and take shots at the opponent’s goal, improving your attacking skills
After you have played someone who is better than you, always ask for a few tips on how to improve your game. Most people are willing to show off their knowledge and tell you how they won. This may show you holes in your game that you were unaware of, allowing you to become a foosball professional
